SPATZ 12 MONTH GASTRIC BALLOON FACTSHEET

The Spatz gastric balloon has a number of advantages over traditional gastric balloons

1) It is adjustable, which means it can be filled or de-filled as your needs and appetite change.

2) It is approved for up to 12 months implantation before removal.

3) It is the first and only balloon to have these advantages. During the implantation period, it is normal for weight loss to slow down or plateau, if this happens, your balloon can be topped up, providing greater restriction.

4) The longer period of implantation also gives you longer to modify your relationship with food and change your eating habits, which in turn leads to increased and lasting behavioural changes.

5) Average weight loss with the Spatz gastric balloon is 4 to 6 stones (25kg to 38kg) over 12 months.

You will be prescribed medication (usually Omeprazole) to decrease the production of acid in your stomach, this should be taken throughout the period of insertion.

Who is the Spatz gastric balloon intended for?

It is intended for patients with a BMI (Body Mass Index) 27 or above, who need to lose between 3 to 6 stones (19kg to 38kg)

Possible side effects

Immediately after the insertion of the Spatz gastric balloon it is likely, but not inevitable, that the patient will experience nausea and possibly vomiting / stomach pain for the first 2 or 3 days after insertion and to a lesser extent for one or two weeks after balloon insertion.

You will be prescribed medications from the clinic to counteract these possible side effects and from your own family Doctor in the longer term.

(Eating too much and eating fatty foods may make you feel nauseous)

Will I need my Spatz gastric balloon adjusted?

It may not be necessary for you to have the volume of liquid in your Spatz gastric balloon adjusted during the 12 month insertion period, however, if you feel your appetite increasing, or your weight loss has slowed down or plateaued, it may be time to arrange for the volume of liquid in your gastric balloon to be increased.

On the other hand, if you are experiencing side effects associated with intolerance (e.g. nausea and/or vomiting) it is possible for the volume of liquid in your balloon to be decreased, thus increasing the probability of you being able to tolerate your balloon for the full 12 months.

Do I need to make any lifestyle changes?

It is important to remember that the Spatz gastric balloon is a tool to assist you in your weight loss goals. There are no 'fad' diets associated with the Spatz gastric balloon, it really boils down to learning to eat smaller portions of healthy everyday food (as opposed to frequently eating junk food, sweets, cakes, sugary fizzy drinks, etc), this requires will power and self discipline.

Regular exercise also plays a key part in your success.

In short, the harder you work with your Spatz gastric balloon, the greater the results you will achieve with this proven weight loss method. Contact us today to begin the journey towards the New You!
